This winter scene of a skater, a favorite motif of Dutch painters from the 16th to the 20th century, is served by a beautiful pictorial quality and a very nice light. Under a vast sky swept by clouds, the painter has managed to render the movement of skaters captured in action. The sun enhances the effects of reflections on the frozen river.

A student of Schelfhout, N.J. Roosenboom worked in The Hague.

Belonging to the Dutch romantic school, he participated in the revival of Dutch painting.

He specialized and gained a reputation for his winter landscapes and skating scenes.
