Francis Coates Jones, a leading figure in the American school of painting
Francis Coates Jones, an ambitious young man from a wealthy Baltimore family, traveled throughout Europe, first to France and then to Italy, where he perfected his polished style and luminous touch. On his return to his homeland, he was commissioned to paint numerous official works. Here, he delivers a painting of great finesse, as shown in the small details such as the still life with oranges and grapes on the bench.
Francis Coates Jones, passionate about Greek and Roman antiquity
Francis Coates Jones likes to depict female figures dressed in antique style, evolving in idyllic landscapes. This theme, inspired by his travels on the Old Continent, was a lasting inspiration for his artistic production. In our painting, two female musicians, zither and tambourine in hand, converse on a stone bench in a green setting. The city of Pompeii stretches out behind them.
