Eustache Grégoire STOENESCU (1885 – 1957), Paris

Eustache Grégoire Stoenescu, from his Romanian name Eustatiu Grigori Stoenescu, born in Craiova and died in New York, was a Romanian painter.

Bucharest

He discovered painting for the first time at the age of 15, when the French painter Léopold Durangel came to his parents’ home to paint a portrait of his mother.
After visiting the Nicolae Grigorescu Retrospective Exhibition, inaugurated in 1897 in Bucharest, in the hall of the Romanian Athenaeum, he irreversibly decided to follow the same path.

Paris

When he was only sixteen, he left for Paris with Nicolae Titulescu, the future Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was studying law in Paris at the time. Stoenescu attended the Académie Julien and the École nationale des beaux-arts, where Camil Ressu, Jean Al. Steriadi, S. Mützner, Nicolae Dărăscu were his colleagues and Jean-Paul Laurens his teacher. His aristocratic background and perfect education helped him adapt to the severe formal climate and academic norms and rules.

He made his debut in Paris, at the Société des artistes français, and in Craiova, at the “Theodor Aman” Art Society exhibition. It was then that he began to paint portraits of numerous cultural, artistic and political personalities, such as Professor Jean Paul Laurens, the painter Stefan Popescu and others.
From 1906, a series of exhibitions followed, the first at the Salon Officiel in Paris, followed by the Jeunesse Artistique and the Jubilee Exhibition, where he won the gold medal.
He exhibited regularly at the official Paris Salon until 1911.

He has taken part in several exhibitions at Galerie Charpentier and Galerie Bernheim in Paris.

He also exhibited abroad in Venice, Craïova, Bucharest, Antwerp, London and in the United States in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

In 1936, Eustatiu Stoenescu was appointed professor of painting at the Bucharest Academy of Fine Arts. In 1941, he became rector of the Academy of Arts.

-1922 – Salon officiel de Paris, exhibits “Portrait de la baronne Levavasseur” and “Portrait du comte Chasigne”.

-Antwerp ( Belgium ), is present at an exhibition of ten paintings.

– Romanian Athenaeum, exhibition with Ion Jalea and Clara Sulzer.

-1923 – Craiova, solo exhibition

-1924 – Venice Biennale, exhibition “Portrait gouvernance Kinst Amelia (Vieux)” “Portrait peintre Stephen Popoescu” “Portrait peintre Jean-Paul Laurens’ and views of Venice.

-1925 – Salon officiel in Paris, exhibited “Portrait du peintre Jean-Paul Laurens”. His painting was bought by the French state.1926 – Craiova, exhibition of the Olt artistic circle (of which he was honorary president).

-1926 – Galerie Jean Charpanrier, Paris, solo exhibition.

– 1927 – “Ileana” Hall, Bucharest, solo show -1928 – Official show in Paris, at the Venice Biennale and at the “Jeunesse Artistique”.

-1930 – New York – Durand Ruel Gallery and Sterner Gallery, solo exhibition

-1931 – Official Salon in Paris and a new solo exhibition in Bucharest. He paints the “Portrait of lawyer Alexandrescu”.

– 1932 – Official Paris Salon, exhibits “Portrait d’artiste”.

– 1937 – “Le Grand Prix” awarded at the Paris World Fair.

-1940 – Official Paris show, “Jeunesse Artistique” and third exhibition of the “Art” Association.

– 1942 – The Official Bucharest Salon wins the National Painting Prize.

– 1943 – 1945 – The “Oltenia Week” exhibition in Craiova, the Official Salons and the “Art” Association exhibitions.
