Biography
Walter Farndon was a child when his parents immigrated to the United States from England. He began his career in the early 1890s, painting floral designs in watercolor for a carpet factory.
For fourteen years, he studied architecture at night at the Mechanics Institute. Determined to become a professional artist despite his family’s financial difficulties, he left the carpet factory after a few years to register in the free schools of the National Academy of Design. After thirteen attempts, his design for a plaster cast of Discobolus (discus thrower) – on which he worked every night for an entire month – was finally accepted by the Academy committee in 1898.
The early persistance of Farndon was succesful ; he was elected a full-fledged National Academician in 1937. He is also a member of the New York Water Color Club, of the American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, American Artists’ Professional League, Guild of American Painters, National Arts Club, New York Society of Painters, Grand Central Art Galleries, and the Salmagundi Club, among others. He has exhibited his work and won numerous awards in New York, as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery and the Boston Art Club.
Vose Galleries has organized six solo exhibitions of Farndon’s oil paintings and watercolors,from 1991to 2013.
