Walter Farndon the painter of the harmony of colors and materials

A mix of soft colors with different shades of blue, of green, of orange and pink.
Walter Farndon works with different kind of material stretching, scratching or diluting as a sculptor, bringing a variety of thickness.

A bold framing and a play of horizontal and vertical lines

Walter Farndon makes us feel that we are part of this scenery of these colorful fishermen’s houses reflected on the water; the sky is almost absent.
House facades, boats, pontoons and pilings cross each other on the canvas in a very masterful way, a testimony of his long years of architectural study.

Happiness, mastery and freedom in his gesture

This important work of the artist features mastery, joy and freedom of creation of the painter.
Following his strong willingness to join the prestigious Natinal Academy school, Walter Farndon puts the technique aside to release a joyful and creative energy. All the happiness of the painter is expressed in this painting,

Biography

Walter Farndon was a child when his parents immigrated to the United States from England. He began his career in the early 1890s, painting floral designs in watercolor for a carpet factory.
For fourteen years, he studied architecture at night at the Mechanics Institute. Determined to become a professional artist despite his family’s financial difficulties, he left the carpet factory after a few years to register in the free schools of the National Academy of Design. After thirteen attempts, his design for a plaster cast of Discobolus (discus thrower) – on which he worked every night for an entire month – was finally accepted by the Academy committee in 1898.
The early persistance of Farndon was succesful ; he was elected a full-fledged National Academician in 1937. He is also a member of the New York Water Color Club, of the American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, American Artists’ Professional League, Guild of American Painters, National Arts Club, New York Society of Painters, Grand Central Art Galleries, and the Salmagundi Club, among others. He has exhibited his work and won numerous awards in New York, as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery and the Boston Art Club.
Vose Galleries has organized six solo exhibitions of Farndon’s oil paintings and watercolors, from 1991to 2013.
