A highly artistic nude between study and painting
In this painting, nudity is interpreted with a certain simplicity and simplicity. The artist’s aim is not to charm us, but to render his model sculptural. The background, treated with large, light, colorful strokes in the manner of an abstract painting, accentuates the artistic side of the work.
Nudity in the intimacy of artists’ studios
Nudes are always popular subjects in painting. Nude drawing allows us to focus on the basic shape and structure of the human body.
Here, brown rings outline the model’s body, a touch marked by engraving and the influence of Paul Gauguin, whom he met in Pont Aven.
Paul Emile Colin
Paul Colin, originally from Nancy, went to Paris in 1887 to study at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and the Académie Colarossi. It was there that he met Charles Filiger. Sight problems soon forced him to return to Nancy, where he began painting while studying medicine. He returned to Paris in the summer of 1890, then joined Filiger in Pont-Aven, where he met Paul Gauguin and Meyer de Haan.
From 1893 onwards, he perfected the technique of engraving standing wood with a penknife.
His works from 1890 to 1900 are marked by the innovations of the Pont-Aven school.
In 1901, he devoted himself to illustrating a number of books.
After the First World War, Colin continued his engraving work as an illustrator and devoted more time to painting.
