We find here the singular technique of the painter; its thick and unctuous paste worked with a brush and sometimes with fingers, with a sober palette in brown, gray and green tones.
A student of architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, he moved to Paris where hebinds with Pierre Laprade with whom he founds a common workshop. After leaving Laprade, he marries Émilie Charmy. He exhibited from 1902 at the Salon d’Automne, at the Salon des Indépendants and at the National Society of Fine Arts, but it was especially during the Retrospective of the Independents of 1926 that he was noticed with the paintings Ma grand-mère, Paysage du Dauphiné, Landscape in Auvergne, View of Notre Dame, Games and Palette and brushes.
